The film opens with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) imprisoned by the fire demon Surtur (Clancy Brown) on the fiery realm of Muspelheim. Surtur reveals that he plans to destroy Asgard in an event called Ragnarok, which Thor initially dismisses.
Return to Asgard: Thor returns to Asgard and discovers that his adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has been masquerading as their father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), while Odin is in a weakened state. Thor convinces Loki to help him find Odin.
Odin's Fate: The search for Odin leads them to Earth, where they find him in Norway. Odin reveals that he is dying and that his death will unleash Hela (Cate Blanchett), the Goddess of Death, who had been imprisoned for millennia. She is Odin’s first-born and has a claim to the throne of Asgard.
Hela’s Reign: After Odin's death, Hela escapes her prison and quickly conquers Asgard, demonstrating immense power by destroying Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Thor and Loki are forced to flee through a wormhole, landing on Sakaar, a garbage planet ruled by the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum).
Sakaar: On Sakaar, Thor is captured and forced to participate in the Grandmaster’s gladiatorial games. There, he encounters the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), who has been living there for two years. Thor and the Hulk, along with the warrior Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), form an unlikely alliance.
Escape and Resistance: The group escapes Sakaar and returns to Asgard, where they rally the remaining Asgardians to resist Hela’s rule. Thor realizes that the only way to defeat Hela is to bring about Ragnarok, the destruction of Asgard, which will also destroy Hela.
Climactic Battle: In a climactic battle, Thor, Loki, Valkyrie, and the Hulk fight Hela and her forces. Thor embraces his role as the God of Thunder, even without Mjolnir, and uses his newfound abilities to fight Hela.
Ragnarok and Resolution: To prevent Hela from ruling the universe, Thor initiates Ragnarok by using Surtur to destroy Asgard. The destruction of Asgard eliminates Hela, but it also means the end of Thor’s home. The surviving Asgardians escape on a spaceship, with Thor assuming leadership as they head towards a new future.
The film combines a vibrant visual style with comedic elements, rejuvenating the Thor franchise and expanding its cosmic scope. It emphasizes themes of identity and leadership while setting the stage for future Marvel Cinematic Universe events.
